A Good Swing Starts with a Strong Base of Support

A good golf swing starts with a strong base of support (hips, pelvis and lumbar spine). A highly conditioned base of support will provide stability throughout the swing and allow forces to be effectively transferred from the legs through the hips to the upper body to produce optimal power and control. A strong base helps protect the joints and other supporting tissues against the strong compression, shear and torsion forces that occur during the golf swing. Unfortunately, there are a number of factors that predispose the golfer to developing poor postural patterns and muscle imbalance that result in a weak base of support.

Texans Find Qigong as a Response to the Obesity Epidemic

It wasn’t long ago that workout programs were limited to variations on the basics: jogging, hiking, team sports, like basketball or soccer, and, if one was lucky enough to have a home or fitness club swimming pool, a few good laps. Even exercise machines tended to only simulate the same activities. Treadmills, stair climbers, stationary bikes, and elliptical trainers were a bit like the hamster-wheel version of trying to enjoy the great outdoors, indoors.


The emphasis was on discipline, and going as long and as hard as a thumping heart would allow. Pushing to utter exhaustion and stumbling out with sweat-soaked clothes were good signs. But times, they are a’changin , and, with a ballooning obesity epidemic on the nation’s hands, contributing, in part, to a growing health insurance crisis, this can only mean good things to come. Texas ‘ obesity rate alone is 27%, 3 percentage points higher than the national average.

Childhood Obesity Statistics and Diabetes

The picture of health presented by current childhood obesity statistics is not a rosy one. The percentage of obese or overweight children in the United States has roughly doubled between 1971 and 2000.


Obesity has become widespread among both adults and children in the United States. The prevalence of overweight and obese children has increased from 15% in 1971 to more than 30% in 2000.


Does obesity follow ethnicity?


There are large disparities in the childhood overweight situation in the Los Angeles County in California. One report published in January, 2006, shows children of Latin American decent leading the “Overweight” competition in that western US state.

An Effective Diet to Lose Weight

When we make a conscious decision to change our eating habits we are beginning a diet to lose weight. Sometimes we may have health issues, such as high cholesterol, which is what leads us to eat healthier. Far too many times we diet to lose weight because of some eminent health issues that force our hand. It’s a shame that we let things get that far. It is possible to just exercise and lose weight, but sooner or later the person will not lose any more weight without changing eating habits as well.

Physical Health is Attainable Through Proper Nutrition and Exercise

Obesity is epidemic in this country for both children and adults. The invention of television, video games, and convenient appliances help to influence us to be sedentary. Obesity can create such problems as Diabetes, Heart Disease, Lung problems and circulation problems. Obesity also can sap your strength. So the cycle goes you are obese, you tire easily so you rest, a lot. You get up and move and you become tired and you rest again. Climbing stairs is nothing less then difficult, going a few steps can make you breathless. Joint problems also can be caused or aggravated by obesity. They say no pain, gain. I say if there is pain rest, you will gain nothing if you injure yourself. This is why it is wise to get a complete physical and the approval of your physician before beginning any exercise or nutrition program.
